ActionAid is an independent, international organization that has been campaigning against poverty and injustice since 1972 in more than 45 countries around the world. Today, over 15 million people learn, through the organization’s programs, to rely on their own strengths to claim a life of dignity and a better and fairer world for all.
Through education, collective action and solidarity, ActionAid brings definitive changes to the lives of more marginalized people. It works closely with local organizations, works with whole communities, and exerts pressure on actors and governments to combat policies and practices that perpetuate poverty and social exclusion.
In Greece ActionAid was founded in 1998.
To date, it has supported 83 communities around the world, thanks to more than 100,000 Greek and Cypriot Child Contributors. Today, 44 communities are supported in 18 countries.
In Greece, it supports children, adolescents and adults belonging to vulnerable low-income families through the Center, a venue in the center of Athens, offering free services to combat social and economic exclusion.
It further contributes to the fight against unemployment by setting up the Action Finance Initiative, the first agency in Greece to provide free access to microfinance funding to those who do not have access to the necessary funds.
It creates active citizens of tomorrow through educational programs in schools in the country with the participation of thousands of students each year.
It informs, concerns and motivates Greek public opinion through campaigns to raise awareness of issues related to global poverty, racism and social exclusion.
It promotes volunteering and active citizenship .
